Betsy Weirich, MS, SM(NRCM), CBSP

BIOGRAPHY
Betsy Weirich is currently the Acting Deputy Director of the Division of Laboratory Science and Standards. This division develops training courses and materials for clinical labs across the country. They also develop both regulatory and voluntary laboratory standards and guidelines to improve the quality of medical laboratory science and testing in support of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) program. Betsy is also a CDC representative for the federal National Interagency Biodefense Campus (NIBC) at Ft. Detrick, MD, and as a previous lead inspector in the national CDC Select Agent Program, she assists federal agencies in preparing for registration to work with Select Agents by conducting facility evaluations of their newly constructed high containment laboratories. She reviews and makes recommendations on laboratory design and operational/biosafety procedures; and serves on lab safety, occupational health, and Select Agent working groups for the federal campus. Ms. Weirich is involved in developing and conducting BSL-3 and clinical biosafety training for CDC, Emory University, the Eagleson Institute and ABSA. She has conducted training in Singapore, Brazil and Kenya, and was a member of the subcommittee that wrote the 5th Edition BMBL. She was Co-Chair of the ABSA Curriculum Development Committee and the ABSA Training and Education Committee. Betsy worked for many years as a laboratorian in both diagnostic clinical and academic research labs, and managed BSL-3 labs in private industry. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she received her MS in bacteriology.
