Gain in-depth information and refine practical skills needed to certify Class II Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) to the NSF/ANSI Standard 49.

This five-day advanced-level, personalized course teaches biosafety cabinet certification according to NSF 49. The subject matter is presented through a combination of lecture, discussion, problem-solving activities and certification labs. During the course, each participant identifies his or her own weaknesses and receives additional instruction in those areas. Following the course, participants are offered an opportunity to take the NSF written and practical exams on-site. Due to the personalized instruction offered, this course is limited in size..

Participants learn how to do the following:

• Explain how BSCs are constructed and function
• Describe BSC types and exhaust requirements
• Follow NSF 49 test procedures for BSC certification
• Use equations to do calculations required during certifications
• Develop a testing grid for BSCs
• Perform inflow and downflow airflow tests for Class II Types A and B BSCs
• Evaluate BSC airflow using smoke pattern tests
• Balance BSC airflows
• Conduct a site assessment
• Perform HEPA leak testing
• Conduct worker comfort and safety tests
• Determine when and how to decontaminate a BSC
• Troubleshoot BSCs
• Solve BSC electrical problems

This advanced level class is for certifiers, facility engineers, and anyone else who needs to learn the details for BSC certification according to NSF49. If additional practice and coaching is needed, this class can be paired with the Applied Practice Workshop.
