BIOGRAPHY
Thomas M. Hart, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a member of the Johns Hopkins Lyme and Tickborne Diseases Research and Education Institute. His laboratory studies how tick-borne pathogens interact with their hosts, with a particular focus on Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease. His research combines molecular microbiology, systems biology, and animal models to understand how the pathogens interact with their host to establish infection, evade immune responses, and cause disease. The goal of his laboratory is the development new approaches for improved diagnosis and prevention of tick-borne diseases, including protein-based diagnostics and therapeutic strategies targeting host-pathogen interactions. He also regularly contributes to public education and public health outreach campaigns addressing tick-borne disease epidemiology, emerging threats, and prevention strategies in impacted communities.
